The Silicon Valley Computer Society (SVCS)is a non-profit educational organization which exists to promote the use and understanding of personal computers, digital photography and website design through meetings, classes, demonstrations and publications and to provide a forum for fellowship, recreation and an exchange of ideas among its members.
GNU Wget is a utility to retrieve content from Web servers. It supports downloading via HTTP, HTTPS, and FTP protocols, the most popular TCP/IP-based protocols used for Web browsing.Its features include recursive download, conversion of links for offline viewing of local HTML, support for proxies, and much more. It appeared in 1996, coinciding with the boom of popularity of the Web, causing its wide use among Unix users and distribution with most major Linux distributions. Written in portable C, Wget can be easily installed on any Unix-like system, and has been ported to many environments including Mac OS X, Microsoft Windows, OpenVMS, MorphOS, and AmigaOS. It has been used as the basis for graphical programs, such as GWget for the GNOME Desktop, KGet for the KDE Desktop, and VisualWget for MS-Windows.
SVCS has established a new Build It Yourself SIG for those members interested in building their own PC systems. The new SIG will meet at MicroCenter in Santa Clara on the first Monday night of each month. The Multimedia SIG which previously met on this night will now be combined with the Digital Imaging SIG on the third Monday nights.
After discussions with SPAUG on membership sharing, the Silicon Valley Computer Society has decided to remain as a separate organization, operating the Special Interest Groups. Effective January 1, 2010 persons attending the SIG meetings at MicroCenter in Santa Clara will be asked to join SVCS. Annual dues have been set at $12 per year, payable on the first of the year.
