Microsoft released retail prices in January, said it has no plans to offer “upgrade” editions, but will sell reduced-price single license “key card” codes for pre-installed Office Starter 2010 mini-suite that will be pre-installed on many new PCs. Boxed copies may usually be installed on two PCs. “Microsoft trimmed the number of retail editions of Office 2010 for the general public to three, down from Office 2007's five.”

“The boxed version of Office 2010 Home and Student, which includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote, comes with a price tag of $149, and lets a family install the suite on as many of three household PCs. A single-license key card will cost $119, 20% less than the boxed copy.” (The equivalent Office 2007 Home & Student did not offer support or upgrades).

“Office 2010 Home and Business, which adds the Outlook e-mail client to the four applications available in Home and Student, runs $249 and can be installed on up to two of the buyer's PCs. A one-license key card will be priced at $199, a 20% savings.” (The equivalent Office 2007 Standard edition lists for $400 /$240 upgrade)

“Adding Publisher and Access, the latter Microsoft's desktop database software, Office 2010 Professional will be priced at $499 and can be installed on a pair of PCs. The single-license key card, however, will run $349, a discount of 30%”. (quotes from Computerworld, Jan 5, 2010)

According to Microsoft’s Office web, “when you purchase Microsoft Office Home and Student 2007, you can get Microsoft Office 2010 with a free download when it’s available”. (http://www.microsoft.com/office/offers/2/?CR_CC=100291595)

Purchase, install, and activate a qualifying Office 2007 product between March 5, 2010, and September 30, 2010, and you’ll be eligible to download Office 2010 at no additional cost. Receive an e-mail reminder when Office 2010 is available for download.
