Configuring a Dual-Boot System for Windows 7 and Ubuntu 9.10
Maurice Green
Now that we have constructed our new video editing system, it is time to configure the BIOS and load the operating systems. This system will be a dual boot system using 64-bit Windows 7 and Ubuntu Linux. Additionally we will configure Windows XP in a virtual machine for running legacy programs which might not be compatible with Windows 7.
Configuration operations include:
- Setting the system boot order and other BIOS parameters
- Creating a RAID 5 array with four 1TB SATA HD using the ICH10R controller
- Setting up the hot swap e-SATA drives using the JMicron controller
- Partitioning the WD Velociraptor HDD for the operating systems and cache
- Installing the Windows 7 and Ubuntu 9.10 operating systems
- Transferring data and settings from existing old Windows XP system to RAID data array.
- Creating an image backup of the OS for recovery.
- Installing and testing application software
Maury will discuss some of the problems he encountered in building this system.
The first part of the meeting will be an open discussion for members to share their computer problems and experiences.
