Build It Yourself SIG Meeting

02/01/2010 7:00 pm

Component Selection: A Panel Discussion
Maurice Green, Kevin Lynn, Bill Young

How fast a processor do I need? Is Intel a better choice than AMD? How much memory should I install? What kind of video card is required? Should I buy more memory or a faster video card? How big a power supply do I need? Which operating system should I use? How much of my old system can I reuse?

In this kick off meeting of the new Build It Yourself SIG, we will have a panel discussion on the topic of defining your performance goals when building a new computer system and selecting the appropriate components to meet those needs. We will attempt to cover all of the major components of the computer system including:

  • CPU (Intel vs AMD; dual-core vs. quad-core)
  • Memory
  • Video adapter
  • Hard drives (including RAID and external storage)
  • Optical drives
  • Power supply
  • Case and cooling
  • Operating System  (Windows vs. Linux)
