Office 2010 is about to Launch

I demonstrated the  new Microsoft Office 2010 Suite on May 12 to CompuSIR and SPAUG groups in Los Altos. Don Heinsen connected his notebook over the local wireless link to his Windows Home Server, logged into his home computer, brought up Outlook 2010 and demonstrated the new features.
I will show Office 2010 again at my Windows User Group on June 14, but Don can not connect to his WHS over MicroCenter's wireless, due to site and port filtering limits at the store.

Moving from Windows XP to Windows 7

After I furnished copy for SPAUG Newsletter, and it was posted on the General Meeting page, I got several comments from members that they wanted to know about how to move from Windows XP to Windows 7, and save all of their favorite things that they had gotten used to in Windows XP.

So I tried out several schemes for upgrading-in-place (U-I-P), from XP to Vista, then from Vista to Win 7, hoping that I could move settings and such automatically.

At my July WinSIG I planned on showing how simple and easy it was to add Windows XP to my Laptop with Vista pre-installed by Sony.

Problems arose which made my presentation less than memorable:

The Silicon Valley Association of Startup Entrepreneurs (SVASE) - co-presenting with Garage Technology Ventures and Microsoft - hosted the fourth annual Launch: Silicon Valley at Microsoft's Mountain View facility. Thirty new companies, including a last minute substitute, byjobi, presented to a capacity crowd at Launch: Silicon Valley 2009. Chosen from more than 400 entries, they presented their new product or service in groups of five, organized by sector.

Connections: Digital Living Conference

I attended the Connections Digital Living Conference during the first week of June (Tuesday - Thursday) at the Santa Clara Convention Center, and reported on the event at my Windows SIG at 7PM on Monday, June 8 at MicroCenter.

Windows 7 Release Candidate is available for Download for free (updated)

I demonstrated Windows 7 at the May WinSIG, running on an Intel DG45FC mini desktop computer with an Intel core 2 duo E8500  (3.16GHz, 45nm 1333FSB 6MB L2 cache) with 4GB of DDR2 800 memory. The minibox will not support quad-core due to heat dissipation limitations.

Choosing a laptop computer

It's a confusing world out there for laptop buyers.

I did a lot of research last year, bought a  Sony Vaio vgn-fz180E 15" with Intel Centrino core 2 duo T7300 CPU, as did two other SVCS members. It has a blu-ray burner, HDMI 1080p (1920x1200) and 1280x800 LCD screen, 32 bit Vista Home Premium. <one user has had problems with the Nvidia 8400M graphics processor, so I am now regretting  not purchasing an extra year of warranty for $80.>
