Samsung Laptop Root Kit - False Alarm?

[UPDATE 3/31/11: Samsung has issued a statement saying that the finding is false. The statement says the software used to detect the keylogger, VIPRE, can be fooled by Microsoft's Live Application multi-language support folder. This has been confirmed at F-Secure and two other publications, here and here. The headline on this article has been changed to reflect this new information.]

[UPDATE 3/31/11: GFI Labs, the maker of VIPRE, has issued an explanation and apology for generating the false positives that led to these articles: "We apologize to the author Mohamed Hassan, to Samsung, as well as any users who may have been affected by this false positive."]

Remember a few years ago Mark Russinovich busted Sony for covertly installing a root kit on computers when listening to music distributed by Sony? Turns out Samsung is doing something similar.  Their root kit includes a key logger which is installed for free on select Samsung laptop computers.  From the time the computer was taken out of the box their rootkit/key logger has been secretly capturing login IDs and passwords.  Have a Samsung?  Look for the key logger in your c:\windows\SL directory.

Great Improvements in Adobe Lightroom 3

He reminded the audience that Lightroom is non-destructive and metadata based. There are no changes to the original image and all changes can be revised or deleted at any time.

As If We Don't Have Enough to Worry About

Formatting hard drives may not remove viruses

We've all been taught the only way to absolutely make certain a computer that's been compromised with a root kit has been cleaned is to format the drive and re-install from known good media.  A new type of root kit is now out there which is able to survive a disk format.  The root kit lives in the NVRAM of the graphics card and makes use of the GPU and graphics card RAM to re-infect the computer.  If you have a computer that's been root kit-ed be sure to re-flash the NVRAM in the graphics card before re-installing the OS.

The Twelve Scams of Christmas

McAfee has unveiled its annual "Twelve Scams of Christmas" - the 12 most dangerous online scams that computer users should be cautious of this holiday season.

"Scams continue to be big business for cybercriminals who have their sights set on capitalizing on open hearts and wallets this holiday season," said Dave Marcus, director of security research for McAfee Labs. "As people jump online to look for deals on gifts and travel, it's important to recognize common scams to safeguard against theft during the busy season ahead."

Who's Watching You Now?

This little tidbit just arrived from Doug Spindler over at Pacific IT Pros:

Microsoft just released Kinect for the Xbox.  The Kinect uses several cameras in place of controllers.  Without notification the cameras will make a video of you while playing one of the games.  At the end of the game it plays it back, then asks if you would like to share it with others on the Internet.  (The video is stored in the Xbox.)

A Wolf in Firesheep Clothing

Firesheep, a new extension for the popular Firefox browser allows anyone to steal your ID on popular websites such as Facebook, Twitter,Amazon, Google and many others. The secret is the session cookies which are sent "in the clear" (unencrypted) between the host and your browser. If you are working in a public space where you are sharing a WiFi network with other people, the Firesheep extention will allow them to capture the cookie as it passes over the network and then they can log into the website with your identity.

Patch Tuesday: Critical flaws haunt Microsoft Office, IE browser

Microsoft dropped its largest ever batch of security patches today to cover a record 49 security vulnerabilities, including several browser flaws that could expose Internet Explorer users to drive-by malware downloads.

The Internet Explorer bulletin (MS10-071) fixes a total of 12 vulnerabilities and because of the risk of zero-click drive-by download attacks, Microsoft is urging Windows users to apply this patch immediately.
